Independence is the only route to cheaper energy bills

Energy bills in Scotland are rising again. Despite Labour’s election pledge to cut bills by £300, households now face costs that are £487 higher than Keir Starmer promised. Nearly half a million people in Scotland are living in extreme fuel poverty – in an energy-rich country that produces far more power than it consumes.

This is the Westminster energy scandal.

Scotland generates huge amounts of clean, renewable electricity – but bills here are among the highest in Europe. That’s because the UK’s broken system links the cost of all electricity to the most expensive source, usually gas. So even when wind and hydro deliver cheap power, households are forced to pay over the odds.

Successive UK governments – Tory and Labour alike – have refused to reform this failed system. Instead of cutting bills, Westminster protects energy giants while families struggle. And as prices rise again, the UK political debate continues to peddle the false idea that renewables are driving up costs – when in reality they are the cheapest energy source we have.

The truth is simple: Scotland has the energy, but Westminster holds the power.

Independence changes that. With independence, Scotland can design an energy system that reflects our resources and our needs – keeping bills down, tackling fuel poverty, and making sure Scotland’s energy wealth works for the people of Scotland, not for Westminster’s Treasury.

The longer we stay in the UK, the longer we pay the price for Westminster’s failure. Independence is the only way to bring Scotland’s energy home – and bring our bills down.
